The Burn Run, or "The Burn" as it is referred to by many runners, is the race to run November 9, 2014. Developed and organized by race Director, John Minnick, of the East Syracuse Fire Department, the race touts a 5K and 10K nationally certified race.
Seven years ago,the East Syracuse Fire Department started a race for firefighters to promote physical fitness in the departments. Our first line of defense against severe burn injuries is our firefighters. They are not only trained in technical firefighting strategies, they are also combat ready physically fit men and women the public counts on to save them during fire calls. The Burn Run is one of the few 5K New York State races that promotes the health and fitness of firefighters.
The Department has, since the race's inception, donated funds to help patients at the Clark Burn Center. In 2011 the Department shifted its focus when the Burn Foundation of Central New York was formed and it was decided to give the proceeds of the race to the Foundation. The primary function of the fund is paying for children with burn injuries to attend Burn Camp where they have an opportunity to interact with other adolescents and receive emotional and physical support. A few of the other projects sponsored by the Burn Foundation are directly helping burn survivors treated at the Clark Burn Center at Upstate Medical Center purchase durable equipment, paying for services not covered by their insurance or the burn center, and sponsoring some staff to get updated education to treat survivors.
This year, along with the unique firefighters division, there will be new sports sponsors, running programs, and new awards strategically developed to give runners a wide variety of race opportunities. We expect to double our race participants again this year. This means we look forward to seeing 1,500 people at the East Syracuse Fire Department on Sanders Creek Parkway!
We hope you will continue your generous support of our endeavor to make life better for burn survivors. Come enjoy a day with your friends and family by running and supporting the Burn Foundation of Central New York. There will be an opportunity to meet firefighters from around the state, staff from the Clark Burn Center, and survivors that have benefited from the public's support of this wonderful event. The Kid's race starts at 8:30 am, the 5K at 9:00 am, and the 10K at 10:00 am.
